Commissions Q & A

:star:Commission status: CLOSED as of 9/29/09
:star:Current # of active Commissions: 5 as of 11/10/09

Q: Do I take commissions?
A: Yes! BUT, I have a very busy work schedule so I only take a few commissions every once in a while.

Q: What are my rates?
A: I have two tiers. Original designs and existing mechs. I charge less to draw an existing mech because it is less work for me. Here are my rates...

Original Mecha Design
$150.00 USD via paypal
What you get: 1 view, black and white with basic shading based on whatever details and inspiration you provide. I keep the original art and give you some high quality prints along with a 300 dpi digital file.
Example:

Existing Mecha Design
$100.00 USD via paypal
What you get: 1 view, black and white with basic shading based on an already existing mecha design. You provide me with reference and I add a little bit of my own flair to it. I keep the original art and give you some high quality prints along with a 300 dpi digital file.

Q: What is your working process?
A: I provide a rough pose sketch after you give me all the reference. You can make comments and then I do the real drawing. You can make final comments after that, but nothing that requires massive re-work.

Q: How to contact me?
A: Please inquire with a note for the sake of privacy.

Q: Why are my rates so high?
A: It's true, you can get someone on DA to do a drawing for $25 and it might even be really good. I charge more because I am very busy and that's the price that makes the work worth my while. I have been known to give discounts if you commission multiple pieces so you are welcome to inquire and make me an offer.

Want more info? Let me know and I will update this list. Thanks!

Mecha “Fail” Re-Design Contest... GO!!!!!!!!!

Mecha “Fail” Re-Design Contest

Hello everyone. I am proud to formally announce my Mecha “Fail” Re-Design Contest! The idea of this contest is to take rejected concept artwork from Microsoft’s MechWarrior 4 games, which were drawn by me, and mix them into new and cool mecha using the image editing software of your choice or you can print out stuff and do some cut-and-paste. Just be sure to scan the image in at a decent resolution. I will post updates through my journal so my watchers will be kept up to date. Please read the rules below and HAVE FUN!

VERY IMPORTANT... you must use parts from the resource images and you need to make something NEW. I prefer to see completely new mechs if possible. There have been enough versions of the Madcat or Atlas so show me something fresh! Here is a sample I made this morning.. I mixed lots of stuff together and drew some new things. I call it the Sanguinox AKA a completely new mech :)

Rules:
1. You can only use the images listed in the “resources” area at the bottom of this message. DO NOT use mecha drawings by other artists or from any other images or you will be disqualified.

2. You must give me credit for the original drawings by placing this image [link] somewhere in the border your re-design.

3. Submissions must be significantly altered from the original drawings. You need to do more than just add a couple of weapons. I want to see drastic ideas and changes so don’t be afraid to mix up the feet from one mecha, the lower legs from another, draw in some custom thighs, add some chunky guns, etc…

4. You may add new elements to the re-design if you draw them yourself.

5. You may alter existing bits and pieces in any way you want, such as scaling, rotating, or drawing into them… whatever it takes to make your idea work.

6. The designs don’t have to be pretty. They just need to convey the awesomeness of your idea. It doesn’t matter if the perspective doesn’t match for all the parts, if you can see the cut outlines from where you chopped up the pieces, or if the resolution is blurry because you had to scale a part up to fit, etc…

7. You may enter as many times as you want but each entry must be significantly different. So, don’t submit a new entry if all you did was change a gun or scooch something over a bit.

8. Deadline? Contest starts NOW and ends midnight, November 29th, 2009.

9. The designs should be posted to your DA gallery along with a link to this journal post so people can easily see what the contest is all about. It would also be cool if you listed some info about the mecha like the weapons load, tonnage, etc… but it isn’t necessary for the contest.

10. Image size should be at least 800 X 600 or larger, but can be horizontal or vertical depending on your mecha proportions.

11. Coloring the designs is discourages so it is easier to judge them on equal criteria.

12. Finally, you need to tell me about your re-design by posting a link to it in my forum, located on the left side of my profile page. [link]

Judging:
I have convinced two other Deviants to help me pick the winning images. I will keep their identities secret until after the judging to prevent bribing ;)

1. I will pick the Grand Prize winner.

2. The other two judges will then select one runner-up each (2 total).

3. All three judges will also select one design each to be posted in a poll for you to vote and select a “mecha fans choice” winner (1 total).

Prizes:
1. Grand prize: I will take the winning design and clean it up and add lots of cool details… it’ll be awesome! I’ll ink and color the design to the specs of the winner. The colored version will be posted to my DA account. I will then mail the original drawing to the winner, whomever they may be, wherever they may be.

2. Runner-ups: The two runner-up designs will be cleaned up and inked, but no color and I will keep the drawing. The inked version will be posted to my DA account.

3. Mecha fans choice: Honorable mention. Bask in the glory of mecha fans everywhere, well, at least on DA.

Resources:
Here are all the images you are allowed to use for this contest. Absolutely no others may be used.

I love mecha... in case you couldn't tell!

I am a freelance illustrator but I used to make computer and video games. I was the Lead artist on Microsoft's MechWarrior4: Black Knight and Mercenaries games. My duties included designing all the mechs as well as creating and texturing the in-game models.

I've also worked on a bunch of how-to-draw books including Mecha Mania, Anime Mania, 50 Robots to Draw and Paint, and 50 Fantasy Vehicles to Draw and Paint.

You can see more of my art on my web site or by checking outmy blog, which I update weekly...

i have made an early concept mech walker, have a look in my gallery coz i cant decide whether it should have a neck or not. HELP ME MAKE IT EPIC WITH IDEAS
:iconmecha-master:
now may be a good time to learn PS. I think all digital artists should know Photoshop. What if you need to make some textures for your 3D model? You shouldn't have to rely on others for that. Tis contest only requires basic tools such as the lasso selection tool, maybe the magic wand, a simple paint brush, and the eraser. You'll need ot make use of multiple layers too, which is easy enough.
:iconaffet-kak:
hmm good point with the texturing part...
ill have to start sometime soon

:iconmecha-master:
looks like you figured out how to submit it. Good job.
:iconshadxw:
Hi there! I'd like to pass along my thanks. I work with mektek and did the Cyclops and a few others. Your concept art was a real help in getting a style appropriate for adding additional designs to MW4:Mercs. I like your work and hope one day to get a chance to work with you on something mech related. Best of luck!

Whaaaa?
:iconmecha-master:
Hi. Thanks for the kind words! You never know about the future. I don't do a lot of video game stuff anymore but I do manage to get a concept art gig every once in a while (doing some concepts for a DS game right now!).
:iconfieryone:
You got some serious nice pieces of art!

From one Mecha fanatic to another, I give you a watch!

I dunno, you decide this for yourself when you reply.
:iconmecha-master:
Awesome, thanks! You won't regret it :)
:iconfieryone:
I know I won't!

Mind if I ask what Mecha shows you like?
